FIUME

Fiume (Rijeka) is a major part and industrial center of Croatia, located on the Kvarner Gulf of the Adriatic Sea. The port was a primary base for the Yugoslav Navy. ,By the 10th century, a recognizable settlement ha developed at the present site of Fiume. It was incorporated into Austria in 1471, was made a free port on 1717, and was declare an autonomous city of Austrian crown in 1770. The French occupied the city during 1008-14, after which it alternated under Austrian, Hungarian and Croatian rule until after World War I when set up as a free city. On September 1919, the Italian military commander D?Annunzio occupied Fiume with his troops, and he proclaimed the ?Reggenza Italiana del Camaro? and the Fieme free State, waiting for the annexation to Italy. Mussolini, who up to the time, had liked enterprise of Fiume, he was obliged to European diplomacy to change direction and, on January 1921 he sent regularly Italian troops to expel D?Annunizo from Fiume. Notes of Austro-Hungarian bank with Fiume overprint circulated since April 1919 up to February 1921. On January 1924, Mussolini proclaimed the Fiume?s annexation to Italy.
