Malaya, a former member of the British Commonwealth located in the southern part of the Malay Peninsula, consisted of 11 states: the unfederated Malay states of Johore, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Trengganu; the federated Malay states of Negri Semibilan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor; and former members of the Straits Settlements, Malacca and Penang. The federation had an area of about 60,000 sq. mi. (155,400 sq. km.). Capital: Kuala Lumpur. It was occupied by Japan from 1941-1945. Malaya was organized February 1, 1948, was granted full independence on August 31, 1957, and became part of the Federation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963.
