Tibet, an autonomous region of China located in central Asia between the Himalayan and Kunlun Mountains, has an area of 471,660 sq. mi. (1,221,599 sq. km.) and a population of 1.3 million. Capital: Lhasa. The economy is based on agriculture and livestock raising. Wool, livestock, salt and hides are exported. ,Lamaism, a form of Buddhism, developed in Tibet in the 8th century. From that time until the 1900s, the country remained isolated from the outside world, ruled from the 17th century by the Dalai Lama. The British in India achieved some influence in the early 20th century, and encouraged Tibet to declare its independence from China in 1913. The communist revolution in China marked a new era in Tibetan history. Chinese Communist troops invaded Tibet in Oct. 1950. After a token resistance, Tibet signed an agreement with China which China recognized the spiritual and temporal leadership of the Dalai Lama, and Tibet recognized the suzerainty of China. In 1959, a nationwide revolt triggered by Communist-inflated land reform broke out. The revolt was ruthlessly crushed.
