TANNU TUVA

Tannu-Tuva Peoples Republic (Tuva), an autonomous part of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics located in central Asia on the northwest border of Outer Mongolia, has an area of 64,000 sq. mi. (165,760 sq. km.) and a population of about 175,000. Capital: Kyzyl. The economy is based on herding, forestry and mining. As Urianghi, Tuva was part of Outer Mongolia of the Chinese Empire when Czarist Russia, extended its protection to the mountainous country in 1914. Tuva declared its independence as the Tannu-Tuva People?s Revolutionary Party. In 1926, following Russia?s successful mediation of the resultant Tuvinan-Mongolian territorial dispute, Tannu-Tuva and Outer Mongolia formally recognized each other?s independence.
