MONTENEGRO

The former independent kingdom of Montenegro, now one of the nominally autonomous federated unites of Yugoslavia, was located in southeastern Europe north of Albania. As a kingdom, it had an Albania. As a kingdom, it had an area of 5,333 sq. mi. (13,812 sq. km.) and a population of about 250,000. The predominantly pastoral kingdom had few industries. ,Montenegro became an independent state in 1355 following the breakup of the Serb empire. During the Turkish invasion of Albania and Herzegovina in the 15th century, the Montenegro moved their capital to the remote mountain village of Cetinje where they maintained their independence through two centuries of intermittent attack, emerging as the only one of the Balkan states not subjugated by the Turks. When World War I began, Montenegro joined with Serbia and was subsequently invaded and occupied by the Austrian. Austria withdrew upon the defeat of the Central Powers, permitting the Serbians to move in and maintain the occupation.
