The state of St. Vincent, a British associated state located in the Windward Islands of the West Indies west of Barbados and south of St. Lucia, has an area of 150 sq. mi. (388 sq. km.). Capital: Kingstown. ,St. Vincent was discovered by Columbus on January 22, 1498, and was left undisturbed for more than a century. The British began colonization early in the 18th century, against bitter and prolonged Carib resistance.
