SAAR

Saar (Sarre, Saarland), the smallest of the ten states of West Germany, is bounded by France to the south and Luxembourg to the west. It has an area of 991 sq. mi. (2,568 sq. km.) and a population of 1.2 million. Capital: Saarbrucken. Principal products are iron and steel, chemicals, glass and coal. ,The area of Saar became part of France in 1766, but it was divided between Prussia and Bavaria by the Treaty of Paris, 1815. The Treaty of Versailles, 1919, made the Saar an autonomous territory of the League of Nations, while assigning the coal mines to France. It was returned to Germany, by plebiscite, in 1935. France reoccupied the Saar in 1945. In 1946, it was assigned to the French occupation zone, and was united economically to France in 1947.
